Grab a bucket of popcorn and take a seat a seat by the fire; we're going to kick this blog off with the story of how we came to be a team in the 2014 Mongol Rally.
Like any great film, let’s open with the end of the story. It's the 5th of October 2013, and a hung-over version of me stands by the window typing details into a website. It’s a website I've seen a few times, but I'm finally entering my details. I finish typing the last letters of our team name, and in a few seconds later I receive an email "Bravo, You are now registered for the Mongol Rally 2014. Splendid news"
Now the ending is out the way, wouldn’t you like to know how it began? Just like any film based on a true story, let’s condense the story and remove any "unnecessary" information.
I often find procrastination is the best approach to anything, and my first year semester one exams were no different. Rather than read about concrete, I sat stumbling the internet. After flicking through page after page of Facebook, YouTube, and stumbleupon I find myself watching a video series made by a team on something called the "Mongol Rally". My attention has been gained; I spend awhile watching videos and reading stories and decide this is the best idea ever. So I send a Facebook message out. In a matter of minutes a reply comes back, unfortunately "expensive" and "dangerous" are the key words - plot twist.
But the story isn't over yet. Fast forward another year and a half, and there I am again sitting at my computer aimlessly trawling the internet. When the planets align and I stumble upon a familiar website, off goes another Facebook message "I still think this is a great idea". "Yeah, may as well" is the response that works its way through the internet towards me. What's changed? I don't know and I don’t ask, all i care about is being one step closer to signing up. After a while of looking around the internet at all the costs and organisation required, we decide it's probably best to sign up next year...
Another year passes of various doubts and problems (this would probably be shown passing in montage form, but I'll leave that up to the artistic vision of the director). A buzz in my pocket, and the text reads "sign me up!".
There we go the condensed story of how we became a team on the 2014 Mongol Rally. Oscar worthy isn't it? I wonder who will play me in the film.
